What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidenced-based 8-hour certification course designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis or challenge. Just as traditional First Aid teaches people how to respond to physical emergencies, MHFA focuses on providing support to those facing mental health issues. MHFA is from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing and internationally recognized in over 20 different countries including the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Mental Health First Aid is skills-based using the ALGEE Action Plan when working with someone who may be experiencing a mental health crisis or challenge. Similar to CPR, students will learn the 5-steps of ALGEE. Students will learn how to ASSESS & identify the signs and symptoms of various mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia and substance use disorder. LISTEN without judgement, fostering an open environment and communication. GIVE hope for recovery and provide local resources. ENCOURAGE appropriate professional help while keeping in mind personal beliefs, cultural backgrounds, and community support. EMPOWER them to make decisions that is best for themselves and practice self-help and supportive strategies.

MHFA trainings is offered in 1 8-hour session, or broken up into 2 4-hour sessions. Trainings are offer in person or virtually, however we strongly recommend conducting your training in person as we feel these are the most impactful trainings. Trainings include several activities and discussions which we find students are more engaged and participative when working face-to-face. However, in today’s digital world, we understand the convenience and accessibility that virtual trainings offer. Mental Health First Aid is available in English and Spanish.

At this time we are only offering Private Mental Health First Aid trainings. For those seeking individual MHFA classes, please visit the National Council for Mental Wellbeing to find a course that is suitable for you. You may click the image to the right to be directed to their website.

At the beginning of every class, our team sets the expectations for the day by prioritizing 3 ground rules.

  1. “The Vegas Rule” - We all know what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, right? Well, what is said in this class, stays in this class. It is important for all students feel comfortable to share their personal experiences.

  2. Participation - Our class is an interactive course with discussions, role-play, activities, and classroom learning. We invite our students to engage in the material as much as possible, while respecting people’s boundaries.

  3. Have FUN! 8-hours is a long time for all of us. Our trainers foster an environment so that it doesn’t feel like “another 8-hour training”.

At the conclusion, all students will receive a 3-year certification in Mental Health First Aid, local resources for mental health access and community support, and a 200+ page MHFA Training Manual.
